A man has appeared before Tallaght District Court following Monday’s eight-hour armed rampage in South West Dublin.

37-year-old Joseph Rafferty of Russell Place, Russell Square in Tallaght was the first to be called before Judge Patricia McNamara this morning.

Detective Garda Nuala Burke told the court Mr Rafferty was charged with six offences.

He’s charged with the hijacking of a black Mercedes Sports Coupe and the possession of a firearm at The Square, Tallaght.

He’s also charged with aggravated burglary and the possession of a firearm at the Watergate estate, Tallaght.

He’s also charged with the robbery of a Subaru Impreza worth around €26,000 at Carroll and Roche Motors, Newlands Cross and the possession of a firearm at the Citywest Shopping Centre.

All the offences are alleged to have been committed on Monday, the 23rd of October. The firearm is described as a PPS-43 submachine gun with seven 9mm round of ammunition.

The court heard the accused made no reply to all charges when they were put to him yesterday evening.

The accused's solicitor Michael Hennessy, told the court there was no application for bail.

He said there were concerns relating to his client’s psychiatric well-being and he asked that Mr Rafferty receive the appropriate psychiatric treatment while in custody.

Mr Rafferty was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next week.

The accused, who was dressed in a fleece top and tracksuit bottoms, didn’t speak during the brief hearing. He gave a thumbs up to some of his supporters who were in court as he was led away.
