A man has died following an incident in Dublin's Temple Bar over the weekend.

Shortly after 1am on Sunday, Gardaí responded to reports of a disturbance outside a pub on Essex Street East, where a man in his 40s was being restrained by security staff.

Gardaí detained the man - however, he appeared unwell and was taken to St. James's Hospital, where he later died.

A post-mortem exam has been carried out, and the scene has been examined.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with camera footage from Essex Street East between 12.30 and 1.30am on Sunday to come forward.

A garda spokesperson says: "Gardaí at Pearse Street are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his 40’s following an incident on Essex Street East, Dublin 2, on Sunday 14th December, 2025.

"Shortly before 1am, Gardaí responded to reports of a disturbance outside a licensed premises on Essex Street East, where a male was being restrained by security staff. Gardaí on foot patrol attended the scene and detained a man in his 40’s. Gardaí subsequently sought assistance from a nearby ambulance crew as the male appeared unwell. The male was taken to St James’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

"The Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination has been carried out by the Office of the State Pathologist. For operational reasons, the preliminary results of the post-mortem examination are not being released at this time.

"The investigation is being led by a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) based at the incident room in Pearse Street Garda Station. The scene has been forensically examined and local policing inquiries have been conducted. A Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been appointed.

"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Additionally, they are appealing to anyone with video footage—including dashcam footage—from Essex Street East between 12:30am and 1:30am on Sunday 14th December, 2025 to contact them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on (01) 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

"Investigations are ongoing."
