A man has died following a stabbing in Longford town.

The incident happened in the Great Water Street area of Longford shortly before midday.

The victim was discovered with chest wounds and was removed to Mullingar Hospital where he was pronounced dead this afternoon.

The area has been preserved for a technical examination.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been in the Great Water Street area between 11.30am and 12 midday to come forward.
