A motorcyclist in his 20s has been killed in a collision in county Laois.

The incident occurred at 7:20pm when the man's motorcycle collided with a car on the old Portlaoise to Ballybrittas Road at The Heath.

The man was taken to Portlaoise hospital where he was later pronounced dead - the driver of the car, a woman in her 70s, was also taken to Portlaoise hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The road is now closed and is expected to remain closed until tomorrow afternoon.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Portlaoise Garda station.
