A man in his 40s has been killed in a road crash in Athlone.

The single vehicle collision happened at 3.20pm this afternoon on the M6 westbound between Monksland Exit and Ballinasloe East.

The man was removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where he was pronounced dead.

The female passenger is being treated in hospitals for her injuries.

The road has now reopened.
