A Romanian man has gone on trial for the murder of a man whose bound body was found in the River Bandon in Cork in November 2011.

His then girlfriend is already serving a life sentence for Jonathan Duke's murder.

In his opening address, Tim OÂ’Leary, prosecuting, told the jury they would hear evidence that Ciprian Grozavu was in a relationship with Catherine OÂ’Connor and had been drinking on the day in question with her and Jonathan Duke - the man he is accused of murdering.

He said they will hear from Mr. GrozavuÂ’s neighbours at Bridge House in Bandon who heard a commotion coming from his apartment that night.

He told them Ms. O’Connor has already been found guilty of murder but that it will be “abundantly clear” there were two people involved.

Mr. OÂ’Leary said it is the StateÂ’s case that Mr. Duke was assaulted and tied up before being dragged down the stairs and cast into the river from a balcony.

A doctor had to wade out into the river to pronounce him dead and a post mortem established heÂ’d been strangled.

The first witness is due to be called tomorrow.
