A man who played the role of a president in a TV series leads Ukraine's presidential election.

Early exit polls suggest actor and comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy has taken the lead in the first round of Ukraine's presidential election.

Zelenskey - who has no prior political experience - secured 30.4 percent of votes, compared to incumbents 17.8 percent, according to one exit poll.

He is known for playing a school teacher-turned-president in the comedy series Servant of the People.

Yesterday evening was a tale of contrasting emotions for the different candidates as  Zelenskey said, "I'm very happy but this is not the final action.

On the other hand, current President Petro Poroshenko described his forecast second place as a "harsh lesson."
