A man in his 30s remains in Garda custody this morning, in connection with the death of a woman in south county Dublin.

Gardaí were called to the scene after the 65 year old woman was reportedly stabbed in the kitchen of her home at Clarinda Park East in Dun Laoghaire, at around 5 o'clock yesterday evening..

The mother of 3 was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent's University Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station. It is understood the man was known to the victim.

Another person, believed to be a male neighbour, is believed to have sustained minor injuries when he tried to come to the woman's aid, after her daughter ran onto the street screaming.

The suspect is believed to have attacked the neighbour, and he's currently being treated in hospital.

A post mortem will take place to determine the exact cause of death.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
