A man remains in Garda custody in Co Cavan this morning, in connection with the stabbing of a woman on Christmas Eve.

The man who's in his late 50s, was arrested on Wednesday, after a woman was found with serious stab wounds to her upper body, at a house in Kilnaleck.

The woman was taken to Cavan General Hospital where she's thought to be in a serious but stable condition.

The man - who's believed to be a well known Republican, and served a sentence for a serious crime committed in the mid 1990's - received hospital treatment for his injuries last night but is back in Cavan Garda Station for questioning.
