A man is in a serious condition after being assaulted in Athy in Co Kildare.

The incident happened on Duke Street at around 8.30pm last night.

A 37-year-old man was seriously injured.

He was originally taken to Naas General Hospital, but he has now been transferred to Beaumont Hospital.

Gardaí have arrested a man in his 30s in connection with the assault.

He's being detained at Newbridge Garda station.
