A murder investigation is underway following the discovery of a man's body in Co Meath.

The remains of the Lithuanian national, aged in his mid 40s, were found by a woman walking her dog on Mornington Beach near Drogheda at 9.30 this morning.

A second scene has been sealed off on Marsh Road in Drogheda, where blood was discovered on a footpath.

Gardai say they will not be releasing the results of a post mortem carried out by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda this evening, for operational reasons.

However it's understood the man, who had been living in Ireland for around four years, had suffered serious head injuries including stab wounds as a result of an assault.

Garda spokesperson Superintendent David Taylor says officers are trying to establish if the man died in another location before his body was taken to Mornington Beach.

He's also appealing for anyone with information or to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Mornington Beach area or any altercations in Drogheda between 10 o'clock last night and 9am this morning to come forward:
