It's emerged the gunman who killed a man and took a woman hostage in Australia was previously cleared of plotting a suicide attack.

Police shot Yacqub Khayre dead during the siege in Melbourne yesterday.

Three officers were also injured.

The 29 year-old was one of two men acquitted by a jury in 2010 of plotting an attack in Sydney.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says people must stay alert.
