Met Éireann Confirms Storm Éowyn Broke Wind Speed Records

Storm Éowyn brought record-breaking winds to a number of parts of Ireland last month.

Met Éireann has released new data on the storm showing hurricane force winds were recorded here.

On Friday 24th of January, Storm Éowyn brought the provisional highest wind speeds since records began at Mace Head, Co Galway.

The highest gust recorded was 184 kilometres per hour.

The highest gusts ever were also recorded at Finner in Co Donegal, Athenry in Co Galway and Gurteen in Co Tipperary.

Meanwhile, two weather stations reached hurricane force-12 on the Beaufort scale - at Malin Head in Co Donegal and Mace Head in Co Galway.

Four stations also reached violent storm force-11, while eight stations reached storm force-10 on the Beaufort wind scale.

More then 700,000 premises lost power as a result of damage to the electricity network during Storm Éowyn.

Two weeks on, 13,000 homes, farms and business are still without electricity.
