Meta expects to lay off 490 staff at it's Irish offices in its latest round of redundancies.

Staff at the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were informed of the job cuts today.

Around 490 roles will be made redundant across a number of teams including finance, sales, marketing, analytics, operations, and engineering.

The final number of redundancies will be subject to the collective consultation process.

Speaking in the Dáil earlier, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar described the job losses as significant.

"It's important that they be allowed to make that announcement and engage with their staff.

"So I'm not going to say too much about that here today.

"That would be, be unfair and inappropriate.

"Obviously, my thoughts are with the staff who are affected and their families.

"I want to assure them that we'll engage with the company to make sure that they're given a decent severance package or redundancy package."

Meta has informed the relevant policy stakeholders, including the relevant Government Departments and State agencies.

Today's announcement and employee numbers relates to full-time Meta employees in Ireland, not contract workers.

It's the latest round of cuts by the tech giant after CEO Mark Zuckerberg in March said that the company is reorganising the structure of its teams which will result in laying off employees worldwide.
