An Afghan interior ministry official says gunmen have attacked the American University of Afghanistan in the capital, Kabul.

Explosions have also been heard.

A number of staff and students are stuck inside classrooms.

Ahmad Shaheer, a student at the university, told the Reuters news agency by telephone that he was trapped inside the university.

"We are stuck inside our classroom and there are bursts of gunfire," he said.
