Minor offenders will be given the chance to avoid court and possible prison terms under new measures in the New Year.

It means adults who have committed relatively minor crimes - like public drunkeness, illegal trading or criminal damage - will be diverted from the courts.

The Irish Independent reports that instead they'll be sent to educational, community and rehabilitation programmes as part of a Community Justice Intervention scheme, led by the Probation Service.
