Adopted people look set to get more rights under new laws that are in the pipeline.

The cabinet's going to discuss a bill this week which would give as many as 50 thousand people the right to their birth certificate for the first time.

Many Irish people who've been adopted have no rights to birth certs showing their birth parents' names.

Under the new Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill, they'd have access to the papers but would have to agree to respect parents' wishes if they had stated they didn't want to be contacted.

According to the Irish Times, the measure's aimed at balancing those parents' right to privacy and the adoptees' identity rights.

The proposed legislation would see a new adoption information register set up that would be run by Tusla, the Child and Family Agency.

It's reported that if the law is passed, a year-long awareness campaign would follow, before it takes effect.
