Police in Nepal say the number of people known to have died in Saturday's earthquake is now more than 3,617.

Aid is starting to arrive to thousands of people who are living outside because it is too dangerous to enter their homes.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says 100 Irish people are believed to have been caught up in the quake and it's working to contact those affected.

While efforts to dig victims out from under the rubble of collapsed buildings are continuing.

Communications Director of the Umbrella Foundation in Kathmandu, Jack Hogan, says they are concerned for rural areas in Nepal.

"The epicentre of the earthquake was actually 70 kilometres outside Kathmandu and most of the kind of peripheral villages outside of Kathmandu had been flattened, so that's where most of the devastation I'd say has occurred and that's where the most work is needed" he said.

"Road networks are kind of limited here in the first place, but a lot of roads have been damaged as well".

"So transport is an issue, and that's something we're going to have to work on in the coming days and weeks" he added.
