A new study from the CSO has found that the vast majority of homes have access to a computer and the internet - and people mostly use them for email.

The Information and Communication Technology survey says 84 per cent have access to a computer and 82 per cent to the internet at home.

Over three quarters of people have used the internet in the past three months - and almost two thirds used it every day during that time.

It's used mostly for email, finding out about products and services, social networking and for travel.

Meanwhile, the CSO says the use of social media by Irish businesses is above the EU average.

Almost half of companies here use some type of social media, such as Twitter or YouTube - placing us third in Europe for social media use in business, behind Malta and the UK.
