A motorcyclist has died after a crash in Co. Roscommon this afternoon.

The man in his 40s sustained fatal injuries when his bike collided with a car at Summerhill in Athlone shortly after 1pm.

Emergency services treated him at the scene and he was brought to University Hospital Galway by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The scene is closed for a forensic examination and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
