The High Court has appointed provisional liquidators to close down Mount Carmel Hospital in South Dublin.
In a statement Declan Taite and Anne O’Dwyer of RSM Farrell Grant Sparks said all patients in the hospital will be fully cared for in Mount Carmel.
The High Court heard there are currently 60 inpatients and 170 outpatients.
As of today no more elective procedures will be carried out and obstetric patients will be transferred to other maternity hospitals in the coming weeks and months.
The hospital in Churchtown was founded in 1949. It specialises in the provision of maternity services and non-emergency elective surgery.
The petition to appoint provisional liquidators was made by the company directors of Mount Carmel Medical Group (South Dublin) Limited.
The High Court heard the hospital has been in financial trouble since 2007 and has been dependent on the financial support of Nama in recent years.
Nama is no longer in a position to continue that support and the company, which has debts of over 39 million euro, is completely insolvent without sufficient funds to meet its overheads.
The court was told that without this intervention the hospital would not have been in a position to continue its operations past Monday.
Before making the appointments, Mr Justice Paul Gilligan received assurances that the hospital would be wound up gradually and that the needs of patients would be met.
328 full and part time Hospital staff will also be affected.
The Joint Provisional Liquidators say they will liaise closely with them to advise them of the details of the wind down and how it impacts on them.
A helpline and email facility has been established to cater for queries from patients.
