Charges have been dropped against a Co Cavan nanny who was accused of shaking a baby to death in Boston in the US.

The local district attorney said the murder charges were dropped after an amended ruling from the Medical Examiner.

Aisling Brady McCarthy, who's 37, spent almost 2 and a half years in jail before being released on bail last May ahead of the case going ahead.

She was arrested in January 2013, five days after 1-year-old baby Rehma Sabir, who'd been in her care, was pronounced dead at Boston Children’s Hospital.

The Medical Examiner carried out a post mortem and ruled at the time that the cause of death was complications of blunt force head injuries, and the manner of death was homicide.

However, in a reversal of its previous position, the state medical examiner's office has now concluded the death of baby Rehma Sabir was NOT a homicide and amended the manner of death to "undetermined".

The medical examiner also said a significant amount of additional information had been presented that was not available at the time of the original conclusion.

In particular the overall state of Rehma’s health and her past medical issues raised the possibility that she had some type of disorder that was not able to be completely diagnosed prior to her death.
