Gardai in Sligo are investigating the murder of a young woman in the town this morning.

A man who was in the house with the woman was tasered by gardai, and is being treated in hospital.

Gardai in Sligo are investigating the murder of a woman in her twenties in Sligo town.

Officers were called to a house on the Mailcoach road at about 10.30 this morning where they encountered a man in his early 30s carrying a knife.

Members of the Regional Support Unit tasered the man.

An ambulance provided medical attention to the man and the woman who was in the house.

The pair were taken to Sligo Regional Hospital for medical attention and the woman was pronounced dead shortly after 11.

The scene is preserved for a medical examination and a postmortem will be carried out by the State Pathologist Marie Cassidy this evening.
