The jurors in the David Mahon murder trial will hear medical evidence relating to the death of Dean Fitzpatrick today.

The 46-year-old denies stabbing his stepson to death outside his apartment in Northern Cross, Malahide in Dublin three years ago.

During his opening address on Monday, Remy Farrell – senior counsel for the DPP – told the jurors it would be difficult to reconcile David Mahon’s peculiar account of what happened on the night of May 25th 2013 with the scientific evidence relating to Dean Fitzpatrick’s fatal injury.

The court heard the 23-year-old father of one died from a significant stab wound to his stomach.

The prosecution claims his stepfather was drunk and agitated when he confronted him about stealing a water bottle from his bike, and that he stabbed him with a kitchen knife after he admitted taking it.

Mr. Mahon told Gardaí that Dean walked into the blade after he took it from him.

Medical experts are due to give their evidence when the trial resumes this morning.
