The number of murders in Ireland has risen by 36 per cent, with 60 deaths in the year to March.

Crime statistics from the CSO show that overall homicides have risen by 23 per cent.

The biggest rise being murders - up from 44 to 60 deaths in the twelve month period.

Homicide also includes dangerous driving causing death, and there were 22 deaths in this category - down 1.

Caitriona Nash works with Advic - which provides help for the families bereaved by homicide.

She lost her cousin Alan 22 years ago, when he was stabbed to death:

Caitriona says most people don't understand how the courts system works, and bereaved families are not offered counselling.
