It has been confirmed that a pregnant woman has died at the National Maternity Hospital, in Holles Street in Dublin.

In a statement tonight, the hospital confirmed a death had taken place this year.

Earlier, it was reported the 34 year old woman died during emergency surgery to deal with an ectopic pregnancy on the 8th of May.

The hospital said all maternal deaths are subject to a Coroner's inquiry.

A spokesperson said the death was "a deeply tragic event".
