Advertising alcohol will no longer be allowed on public transport or near schools by this time next year.

The Health Minister has signed an order to allow 23 sections of the Public Health Alcohol Bill to take effect.

Heavy restrictions on advertising alcohol are to be brought in on a phased basis over the next three years.

By November 2019, there will be no ads for booze on buses/trains or trams or near schools, creches or playgrounds.

Advertising drink will be banned at the cinema unless the film is over 18s, and children's clothes that promotes alcohol, such as jerseys, will have to stop being sold. By November 2020, shops will have a number of restrictions on how they display alcohol for sale. Bottle and cans will not be allowed to be visible, but sectioned off behind barriers.

Then by November 2021, advertising alochol at sports events, or events aimed at children will be no longer allowed. Alcohol brands will aslo be banned from sponsoring certain events such as driving or racing motor vehicle tournaments.

The Health Minister in signing the order said the measures in this Bill will make a real difference to changing the culture of drinking in Ireland over a period of time."
