A new bill which will give legal recognition to transgender people has been passed in the Seanad.

Under the Gender Recognition Bill- trans people over the age of 18 may change official documentation such as their birth certificate or passport to their preferred gender.

Applicants will also be able to have their gender recognised as they enter into marriage or civil partnership.

16- and 17-year-olds will require a court order to obtain legal recognition of their gender.

The Bill will be signed into law by President Michael D Higgins over the next seven days.

TENI Chair Sara R Phillips said "This legislation marks an incredible shift in Irish society."

"Trans people should be the experts of our own gender identity. There is a clear legislative trend towards self-determination and Ireland is taking its position as a global leader in the area of trans rights. Self-determination is at the core of our human rights," said Ms Phillips.
