New blame game over IBRC inquiry's legal woes

A new blame game has broken out between the government and opposition over the Inquiry into IBRC.

Today marks the deadline for opposition TDs to send their ideas to Enda Kenny about how the inquiry can be saved from its legal problems.

But the Taoiseach says the opposition also has to carry some of the blame for not spotting the issues sooner.

He has also refused to publish the legal advice provided to cabinet by the Attorney-General, Máire Whelan, upon whose advice the cabinet first drafted the terms of reference.

Sinn Féin's Gerry Adams said the terms of reference put forward by the government - which were ultimately voted through by the Dáil - were a "total and utter shambles".

Meanwhile the TD who first raised concerns about IBRC's actions, the Social Democrat TD Catherine Murphy, has called for the inquiry to be narrowed - saying only 12 major transactions appear to merit any investigation, rather than the 38 the inquiry is currently due to examine.
