The British government has ordered a new review of paramilitary organisations in Northern Ireland.

The review ordered by Theresa Villiers appears to have broken a deadlock and paved the way for a new round of crisis talks next Monday.

The assessment will be carried out by the PSNI and security officials in the UK - and is aimed at informing the all-party talks about the true status of the IRA and other groups.

DUP leader Peter Robinson says the move has convinced his party to attend a new round of talks next Monday:

Sinn Féin had asked the British government for a gesture to get Unionists to attend - with Gerry Adams saying the party would accept any "fig leaf" or "sop" that Unionists needed to allow the talks begin.

But the deputy first minister Martin McGuinness says there are other matters to discuss:

The Irish government has also welcomed the news that the talks will now go ahead on Monday.

In a statement Charlie Flanagan, the foreign affairs minister, says the development ends "ten days of shadow-boxing".
