New state-of-the-art sonar imagery of the wreck of the Lusitania has been published.

The passenger ship was sunk 100 years ago tomorrow, May 7th 1915, off the coast of Co. Cork.

The 240 metre long vessel is clearly defined on the sea floor, lying on its starboard side and standing over 14 metres high above the seabed.

The Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat, causing the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew. The sinking was one of the factors which ultimately brought the U.S. into World War I.

A team from the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and the National Monuments Service produced the brand new sonar imagery of the historic wreck.

Experts say the new survey data is extremely important from a site protection point of view.
