New Justice minister to be named

The Taoiseach will this morning announce the name of the new Minister for Justice.

An official announcement is due in the Dail at 10:45am this morning.

Four Fine Gael TDs are considered the frontrunners to take over the job, following Alan Shatter's resignation yesterday.

Labour's agreed to allow Fine Gael hang on to the justice portfolio - meaning the prospective candidates all come from within Fine Gael.

Transport minister Leo Varadkar is already intimately aware of the penalty points controversy - and will have a slight head-start if he gets the job - while the agriculture minister Simon Coveney is also a possibility, as a safe pair of hands and a potential future Taoiseach.

Meanwhile the party's chairman Charlie Flanagan is also a former justice spokesman, and carries respect and authority around Leinster HOuse.

But all three have one major drawback: all went aganist Enda Kenny in Fine Gael's leadership heave in 2010.

That could see the job fall into the hands of the children's minsiter Frances Fitzgerald, who would meet Labour's approval as one of the most liberal ministers within Fine Gael.

If a current minister gets the job, Junior minister Paschal Donohoe is considered the most likely replacement.
