New legislation aimed at tackling sham marriages

 New laws have come into effect tackling marriages of convenience in Ireland.

They give a registrar the right to investigate a couple who are looking to marry, and ultimately he or she can refuse to issue a marriage registration form.

The Minister for Justice says the right to marry under EU Free Movement laws is abused in some cases and this won't be tolerated.

Frances Fitzgerald is raising concerns about the potential for people to be coerced in sham marriages, and even trafficked here for that purpose, and says this new laws are essential to stopping such cases.
