New proposals for Junior Cert

A document being put to teachers today will suggest teachers assess their pupils, but it won't count towards the final Junior Cert grade.

The executive councils of the TUI and ASTI meet to consider the proposals - to try to end the long running row over junior cycle reform.

The new document has been branded an 'honourable settlement' by mediators.

It will see one grade given for the traditional Junior Cert exams, then list separately what students achieved in school.

Mediator Dr Pauric Travers is backing proposals for two school-based assessments - one in second year and another in third year - with results being initially reported by schools.

Mr Travers says that if these proposals are accepted, further discussions will be needed and the introduction of the new Junior Cert Science syllabus - due to come into practice in Septemeber - will have to be delayed.
