EU Ministers have moved closer to a One Stop Shop mechanism for data protection.
It means that for the first time the same rules will apply to all EU citizens and each country will have a watchdog to whom complaints around privacy issues can be lodged.
Businesses will also have a single point of contact with the regulatory system.
Ireland has supported the proposals from the outset.
