New school rules are on the way to help transgender pupils.
There are no official figures for the percentage of Irish people who are transgender - but internationally it's around 1 per cent.
That would mean in an average 600-pupil school there would be 6 transgender people.
The Department of Education is coming together with a number of interest groups to discuss issues like uniforms, toilets, changing rooms and bullying.
The position for pupils in single sex schools is also a key talking point.
I've been speaking to Health and Education Manager with TENI Ireland Vanessa Lacey.
I began by asking her how many young people are affected:
