The Minister for Finance appears set to defy the Troika over the extent of austerity needed in the next Budget.

Both the IMF and the European Commission are demanding 2 billion euro in spending cuts and new taxes.

Michael Noonan says that shouldn't be necessary - but that it's too early to say precisely how much pain the taxpayer can expect.
