The Minister for Finance has launched a scathing attack on Sinn Féin - saying their budget strategy was "economic nonsense" and "pretend economics".

It's after Sinn Féin again called for the Government to ditch the plans to charge for water from the start of next month.

But Michael Noonan - who was taking Leaders Questions on behalf of the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny - said the party also wanted the property tax abolished.

He said Sinn Féin's economic demands would require €7 billion in next taxes elsewhere - and he says Sinn Féin needs to find people with a background in economics and "who can add".

"Who are you going to nail? The rich? Who are the rich?", the minister said incredulously.

"Putting down a red line issue is like an auld fella walking up and down the boundaries of the Ballroom of Romance," he added, "saying that he won't dance with any of those women over there.

"Nobody wants to dance with him," the minister joked. "Red lines? Red lines? Are you joking me?"
