Number Of People Seeking Help For Gambling Addiction Has Doubled

There's been a major rise in the number of people seeking treatment for gambling addiction.

Mayo Footballer Niall McNamee is a recovering gambling addict, he's teamed up with the Rutland Centre in Dublin to launch Recovery Month, an initiative running from the 1-30th of September which aims to highlight recovery and treatment.

Since 2007 the number of people seeking treatment for gambling addiction has almost doubled going from 7% to 13%.

The alarming figures are being attributed to the ease of access and the growing variety of options thanks to gambling apps and websites.

CEO of the Rutland Centre, Maebh Leahy, is calling on the Government to enact the Gambling control Bill which was published in 2013.

Alcohol is also a huge problem, 93% of women at The Rutland Centre presented with an alcohol problem.

And addicts are getting younger with an increase in 18 to 24 year olds being treated for various addictions including drugs, drink and sex.
