A nurse quarantined in the US after returning from Sierra Leone has defied restrictions and gone for a short bike ride.

Kaci Hickox who tested negative for Ebola was told by the state of Maine to stay home for at least 21 days.

The rules are stricter than what the US national government recommends.

Shortly after 9am she went for an hour long cycle with her boyfriend, followed closely by two police cars and a caravan of reporters.

She has insisted all along that it is not her intention to put anyone at risk, but aadded that she is happy to risk going to court for disregarding her curfew.

State law allows a judge to grant temporary custody of someone if health officials demonstrate "a clear and immediate public health threat".

However, Maine health officials could have a tough time convincing a judge that she poses a threat, experts said.  This latest move would suggest that court action is almost certain.
