A retired judge will lead the Inquiry into the Olympic ticketing scandal.

Sport Minister Shane Ross met with the Attorney General this afternoon and decided a judge-led, statutory inquiry would be the most appropriate mechanism to establish the facts.

The judge will be appointed next week and the Terms of Reference will be published afterwards.

 Juliette Gash reports from the Department of Transport:

Education Minister Richard Bruton defended Minister Ross' handling of the situation saying he had acted swiftly on the matter.

The Olympics Council of Ireland issued a statement earlier saying it would fully comply with a State inquiry;

"The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) confirms that it will cooperate fully with any State inquiry into its handling of ticketing arrangements for the Rio Olympics. The OCI will now also commission its own independent inquiry into the ticketing arrangements for Rio 2016. The previously announced internal inquiry by the OCI has been discontinued."
