TDs demand that RTE explain response to legal threats

Senior RTE executives are to be asked to explain the broadcaster's approach to legal threats, after reportedly paying €85,000 to settle a claim last month.

The Oireachtas communications committee's request comes amid debate about whether Ireland's libel laws will have a negative effect on coverage of next year's referendum on marriage for same-sex couples.

The communications minister Pat Rabbitte says people in public debates shouldn't feel the need to reach for legal letters if they have been criticised.

Meanwhile the person whose comments instigated the legal threats - Rory O'Neill, a.k.a. drag queen Panti - has become an international sensation.
