Older people are four times more likely to become victims of phone scams, where fraudsters trick them out of their savings.
Britain's Financial Ombudsman Service reviewed 185 cases and found most of those who were targeted were aged over 55.
The watchdog says criminals pretend to be from a bank or the police, and convince victims that they need to transfer their money.
