It's one of the biggest night's on the Hollywood calendar, the countdown to Sunday's Oscars is on.

 

Ellen DeGeneres will host the 86th Academy Awards live from the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles. We'll see performances from the Best Song nominee's including U2, Pharrell and Idina Menzel.

 

12 Years a Slave has emerged as the front runner to win Best Picture after winning the BAFTA last week. For the last five years, the film which won the BAFTA award has gone on to win Best Picture. Last year it was Argo, and before that The Artist, The King's Speech, The Hurt Locker and Slumdog Millionaire.

 

Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated for his fourth Oscar. He faces Matthew McConaughey, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Christian Bale and Bruce Dern in the Best Actor category. McConaughy is the favourite to win, after his stunning performance as AIDS victim Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.

 

Irish actor Michael Fassbender has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 12 Years a Slave. The Academy is known for favouring transformations, so Jared Leto is his biggest competition in the category.

 

Cate Blanchett's brilliant performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, is sure to win her an Oscar. Cate, who plays a New York socialite who loses her wealth, husband and status has picked up numerous awards for the role throughout the season.

 

Daniel Day Lewis, Charlize Theron and Bill Murray are just some of the stars who will present awards at the ceremony on Sunday, watched by millions across the world.
