At least 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate after a new wildfire broke out along the French Riviera.

Wildfires have already consumed swathes of forest in tourist-packed southeastern France in recent days - as well as on the island of Corsica.

The new fire has left a trail of havoc, in the height of the holiday season, near Bormes-les-Mimosas, southwest of Saint Tropez on the Mediterranean coast.

The fire broke out just before 11pm on Tuesday and burned 800 hectares of forest by Wednesday morning, with 540 firefighters sent to tackle the blaze.

Around 3,000 campers were among those evacuated from La Londe, La Lavandou and Borme-les-Mimosas.

A fire service official said: "The evacuations, at least 10,000, followed the progression of the fire. It's an area that doubles or triples its population in summer."

Tourists in 1,000 camping plots were forced to flee, according to Lisa Minot, The Sun's travel editor, who was at the scene.

There are no reports of any Irish affected and there's been no warning against travelling the region.

Pat Dawson, CEO of the Irish Travel Agents Association, says people should monitor the news and listen to authorities.

Firefighting planes were heading to and from the sea to collect water before dumping it on the flames, while the campsite's sprinkler system was being used in an attempt to stop the blaze jumping across from the hills.

More than 4,000 firefighters and troops have been deployed around southeastern France in recent days in an attempt to battle blazes in Corsica, Vaucluse and Carros – north of Nice.
