Syria's antiquities chief says Islamic State militants have blown up one of the most important sites in Palmyra.

The Roman-era Baal Shamin temple was reportedly destroyed along with some of the ancient city's famed columns.

A week ago the militants beheaded an 82-year-old scholar who had worked for more than 50 years as head of antiquities in the city.
