1 in 6 young people are living in homes where parental alcohol misuse is a regular occurrence.

That's according to Alcohol Action Ireland, which has teamed up with Mental Health Ireland to tackle the effects of alcohol on our mental well-being.

Research shows that people with a serious mental illness are three times more likely to become alcohol dependent compared to the general population.

200,000 young people are suffering the impact of alcohol related harms.

These children are twice as likely to experience difficulties at school, are three times more likely to consider suicide and five times more likely to develop eating disorders.

CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland Dr. Sheila Gilheany wants the link between alcohol and mental health issues recognised.

"There's an awful lot of gaps in the system. Firstly, there are long queues for people on waiting lists even just simply to see therapists of psychologists."

"We need action around the overall consumption levels in the country. That's something that is tackled by minimum unite pricing and a reduction in the amount of advertising that's out there"
