A 63 year old man has died in a traffic accident in West Cork in the early hours of this morning.

He was knocked down by a 4-by-4 vehicle on the Kilcrohane Road near Durrus just before 2am.

Emergency services treated the man at the scene but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The man's body has been taken to Cork University Hospital for a post mortem examination.

The road is currently closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.
