A pedestrian has been killed and two Gardai injured in a road crash in Co Galway in the early hours of this morning.

It happened on the N18 near Ardrahan shortly after half past 12.

A 66 year old man was killed when he was hit by a car - the car also hit a parked Garda car, injuring two officers who were outside the vehicle at the time.

The pedestrian died at the scene - the officers were taken to University Hospital Galway and their injuries are described as non-life threatening.

A man in his 40's who was driving the car was arrested at the scene - he was taken to Gort Garda Station but has since been released.

The road is closed for a forensic examination and Gardai are appealing for witnesses.
