There are calls for calm following an attack at a repossessed home and farm in Co Roscommon over the weekend.

Eight people were injured and three people were taken to hospital for treatment following the incident in Roscommon in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardai say they are investigating criminal damage and assault following the incident, which happened at 5:30am at Flaske.

A dog had to be put down due to the severity of the injuries it received, while four vehicles were also set on fire.

The house and adjoining farm had recently been repossessed.

Local Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy says there's now a need to calm the situation down.

He explained that locals were "quite distraught" following the eviction last week.

Deputy Murphy observed: “I suppose the whole episode has upset a lot of people and while there seems to have been a very bad handling of the eviction, I have to condemn the violence.

“Most people I have spoken to do not want that type of scene... However, it is absolutely essential that the bank would deal with this matter very urgently and come to some sort of settlement with the family."
